Severe Wear or Fading

If a door has severe wear to the varnish and color, a strip down may be necessary.

The strip down process takes several days.  In most cases, everything can be completed on site.  If not, the door will be taken back to the shop and the entranceway will be sealed off.

Stripping the door

The first day consists of taking the door off of the jamb and sealing the entranceway with plastic.  Then, we use a chemical stripper to remove the varnish from the exterior.  Once that is completed, we scrub the door to remove any remaining chemicals.

Now it is ready to be sanded in preparation for the stain.  The door is then reinstalled and stained in place.

You are able to close and lock your door at the end of the day.

First coat of varnish

On the second day, the door is visually inspected to determine if any additional stain needs to be applied.

Then the first coat of varnish is brushed on the door.

The door will need to remain open for at least 3 hours; longer if possible.  The entrance will be covered with paper and plastic.

Multiple Coats

The process for the second and third coat are very similar.  First the door is lightly sanded to roughen up the surface so the next coat will bond.  Once the doors are wiped down, the coat of varnish is applied.

The entranceway is covered up with paper and plastic to keep dust, bugs, and sunlight off the door while everything is drying.

After the third coat has dried, you are all set!  The paper is removed and you have a door that looks brand new.
